The light version of Outlook Web App is much simpler than the standard version, both in appearance and in function. And, because the light version of Outlook Web App is HTML-based, it can work better with assistive technologies such as screen readers.

If your browser doesn't support the standard version of Outlook Web App, you automatically see the light version of Outlook Web App.
How do you know you’re in the light version Outlook Web App?

How do I get back to Office 365?
When using the light version of Outlook Web App, the navigation to the rest of Office 365 is not available. For example, if you’re using Office 365, you can’t get to your SharePoint sites.
To get back to Office 365, you can either use the back button in your browser or go to https://portal.office.com , and sign in again.
How do I get to the standard version of Outlook Web App?
If you did not choose the light version, just sign out and then use a supported browser to sign back in.
If you did choose the light version from an option, here’s how to get back to the standard version of Outlook Web App:
In the light version, go to Options > Outlook Web App version.
Clear the Use the light version of Outlook Web App check box.
Sign out of the light version, close your browser, and sign in again using a supported browser. You may need to close all open browser windows before you can sign in again.

What’s different between the light and standard versions of Outlook Web App?
The light version of Outlook Web App has fewer features than the standard version. See Compare the standard and light versions of Outlook Web App for details.
Some features can be set up in the standard version of Outlook Web App or in Outlook, and then can be used in the light version. For example:
Inbox rules are stored on the server that hosts your mailbox and work no matter what client (the light version of Outlook Web App or a different email program) you’re using to access your account.
Contact groups. In the light version, you can use groups that you created in Outlook Web App or Outlook, but you can’t modify them.
Tasks and notes. You can read tasks and notes that you created in Outlook Web App or Outlook.
Connecting or disconnecting other email accounts.
The following list shows some features that are available in the standard version of Outlook Web App, but not in the light version:
Built-in spell check. If your browser contains a spell checker, you can use it.
Weekly or monthly calendar views.
Access to shared mailboxes or shared calendars.
Importing or exporting messages or contacts.
Creating or modifying tasks or notes.
Are there any other options if my browser isn’t supported?
If the light version of Outlook Web App doesn’t meet your needs, and you can’t use a supported browser, try one of these other options for accessing your mailbox:
Outlook. If your organization provides Outlook, run it from your laptop or desktop. For more information, see Instructions for setting up email.
Use a mobile device. For detailed instructions for your phone or tablet, including Android, iPad, and iPhone, see Phone and tablet setup reference.
Use an email program that supports the POP or IMAP protocols. For more information, see Email program setup reference. To find out the settings required for POP or IMAP, including the Exchange Server name, see Options > About.
If email that you expect isn’t in your Inbox, here are some ideas for troubleshooting.
Check your junk email folder.
If the email is in a connected account, it is pulled into the light version of Outlook Web App once an hour.
Check with the sender to make sure the message was sent to the correct email address.
Refresh your browser by using Shift+F5. Messages are available as soon as they are received by the server.
