Open a file that was created by another application

Word provides file format converters to open some files that were created in other applications. These converters are installed with Word.

  1. On the Standard toolbar, click Open a document  Open button .

  2. On the Enable pop-up menu, click the file type that you want to open.

If you don't see the file type, or if you don't know the file type, click All Files.

  3. Locate the document that you want to open, and then double-click it.

    Notes:

    • Because Word must convert the file to open it, some changes might occur in the document's formatting, graphics, and fonts.

    • To open a document that you used recently, on the File menu, point to Open Recent, and then click the file name.
