Line breaks or page breaks change when I open a document

Cause: The document was not created by Word, and Word doesn't treat line breaks and page breaks exactly as the application that was used to create the document.

Solution:    Change the way that your document appears on the screen.

  1. On the Word menu, click Preferences.

  2. Under Output and Sharing, click Compatibility  Word Compatibility Preferences button .

  3. Do any of the following:

Do this

Set options for a specific application

On the Recommended options for pop-up menu, click an application.

Select options manually for the current document

Under Options, select the display options that you want for the current document.

Note: The selected options affect the document's appearance only while you're working with it in Word. The document is not changed permanently.
