Get started using a screen reader in Yammer

Yammer is a great way to share information inside your company. If you use a screen reader, this article can help you navigate in Yammer.

Notes: 

  • When you use Yammer, we recommend that you use Internet Explorer as your browser

  • Yammer is a web-based application, so the keyboard shortcuts and navigation may be different from those in the Yammer desktop app.

Sign in to Yammer

There are two ways to log in to Yammer: through the Office web portal, or though Yammer.com.

Sign in through the Office portal

To sign in via the Office portal, you must be signed in to your Office account.

  1. Go to www.office.com. Log in, if necessary.

  2. To go to the Yammer link in the page body, press the Tab key repeatedly. You hear “Yammer.” To Launch Yammer, press Enter.

You are now on your personalized Yammer home page.

Sign in through Yammer.com

  1. Go to www.yammer.com.

  2. To get to the Log In link, press the Tab key. You hear “Log in.”

  3. To select the Log In link, press Enter. This takes you to the Log In screen. The focus us in the Email Address field.

  4. Type your email address and press the Tab key.

    Tip: Some organizations have a special log-in screen. If your organization has a special log-in screen, once you type in your email address and press the Tab key, you will automatically be taken there. Follow the on-screen instructions to sign in.

  5. Type your Yammer password and press Enter.

    Tip: If you’ve forgotten your password, press the Tab key until you hear “Forgot password?” and then press Enter. This takes you to the Forgotten Password screen. The focus is in the Email field. Type your email address and press Enter. You will be sent an email to help you retrieve your Yammer password. To get back into Yammer, follow the instructions in the email.

You are now on your personalized Yammer home page, which lists all discussions in all groups that you follow.

Follow groups

  1. Press Ctrl+F6 until you hear “Home,” and then press Tab until you hear “More.”

  2. To open the More Options submenu, press Enter.

  3. To get to the Groups link, press the Down Arrow key. You hear “Groups.”

  4. To get to the Groups listing page, press Enter. You hear “Suggested groups.”

    Tip: It takes 15-60 seconds to load the new page.

  5. To get to the All Groups link, press Ctrl+F6 until you hear “Create a group.” Then press the Tab key until you hear “Search button.”

  6. To start moving through suggested groups, press the Tab key again. You hear “Decline this suggestion,” then, after pressing the Tab key again, the name of the group, and, finally, “Join.”

  7. To join a group, press Enter. There is no verbal feedback when you join a new group, but if you press Shift+Tab and then press the Tab key again, you hear “Joined” instead of “Join.”

  8. Continue moving through all the groups on the page, or use the Search feature to find specific groups to join.

Once you have joined a group, you can view that group’s messages by following the link in navigation pane on the left side of the page.

Subscribe to groups

When you view one group’s feed, you can subscribe to that group and receive an email whenever someone starts a new discussion thread.

  1. To get to the Access Options section, press Ctrl+F6 until you hear “Subscribe to this group by email.” The focus is on the email subscription check box.

  2. Select the check box to subscribe to this group.

    Tip: You can come back to this check box and unsubscribe at any point. If you leave the group, you are automatically unsubscribed.

Follow discussions

  1. On any Yammer page, press Ctrl+F6 until you hear the name of the first poster, which indicates that you are navigating the page body. If you hear “Members,” you have moved past the page body and into the right column; to get back to the page body, press Shift+Ctrl+F6.

  2. To get through the post options and into the Discussion Options submenu, press the Tab key until you hear “More discussion options.”

  3. To open the Discussion Options submenu, press Enter. You hear “Follow in Inbox.”

  4. To select this option and receive emails whenever someone adds a post to this discussion, press Enter.

Additionally, you can access Yammer’s native help from any page, from the Office ribbon. Yammer is part of Office Online. It has an Office ribbon at the top of the page where you can quickly access any other Office 365 apps and your Office account settings.
