Use the Bar Text tab in the Format Bar dialog box to customize the text associated with an individual Gantt bar on the chart portion of a Gantt view. You can have the text of a chosen field appear on any of the four sides of the Gantt bar or inside the bar itself.

Display a Gantt view. On the Format menu, click Bar, and then click the Bar Text tab. You can also double-click on the Gantt bar you want to format to open the Format Bar dialog box.

Text definition table

Left, Right, Top, Bottom, Inside     Show the name of the field whose contents will appear in position beside or on the current Gantt bar. To add or change the text to be displayed for the current Gantt bar, click in the field representing the position you want for the text (for example, Right), click the arrow, and then click the field, For example, Cost1. All task fields, including custom fields, are listed.

You can display the contents of one field per location. For example, you can show a task's start date to the left of the bar, its finish date to the right, and the task's priority inside the bar.

To remove text from a Gantt bar, click in the field, and then press BACKSPACE to clear the field name.

Sample     Shows a preview of how the Gantt bar and text will look with the options that you specified.

Reset button

Returns Gantt bar text to the settings that were in effect before you used the Bar command. The settings return to those specified in the Bar Styles dialog box.

Notes: 

  • If more than one bar is being drawn for a task and you want to format the text for a specific bar, double-click the bar.

  • If you click Reset, the bar text returns to its original appearance as specified in the Bar Styles dialog box.
