Fixes or workarounds for recent issues in OneNote for Windows

Last updated: October 2016

When using OneNote 2016 and trying to access your Quick Notes section, it may not finish loading and the progress message may appear to be stuck.

We are currently working on a fix for this issue. In the meantime, we recommend the steps in this troubleshooting article: Troubleshoot opening Quick Notes in OneNote 2016 for Windows.

When using the OneNote app on your Windows 10 device including Windows tablet and phone, you may find that the spellchecker or automatic language selection is not working correctly when you change your keyboard layout to another language other than English.

We are aware of this issue and are working on a fix. In the meantime, we recommend that after launching OneNote, you switch the input language to English first, and then switch back to your desired language.

After running the Windows 10 Anniversary update 14393.187, you may face repeated crashes following several minutes of program not responding with OneNote 2016 for Windows desktop and OneNote for Windows devices. This issue is most visible when trying to move, copy or manipulate large blocks of ink, copy handwritten ink notes to another page, or when you copy/cut handwritten notes.

We're aware and currently working on a fix. In the meantime, if you run into this issue, proceed to these workaround steps:

  1. Select the ink that you want to copy with the lasso tool.

  2. Right-click and select Treat Ink as Drawing.

  3. Cut, copy or manipulate the selected writing as desired.

  4. You can select the ink you have manipulated again if you like. To do this, right click and choose Treat a writing to make it searchable again.

When opening an Office application, you may see the following error message:

"Microsoft Office cannot find your license for this application. A repair attempt was unsuccessful or cancelled. Microsoft Office will now close."

Important: This error appears if you have this Office 2016 build: 16.0.7167.2040. If you don’t have this specific version and you’re getting this error, or you’re getting a different error, we recommend you create a new post. To check your Office version, choose the Uninstall a program option in the Windows Control Panel, find your Office program in the list, and check the version number.

This licensing issue has been resolved in Office 2016 version 16.0.7167.2055 or later. To get the latest update, please run an online repair of Office 2016:

  1. Restart your computer. Don’t open any Office applications when you’re back on your desktop.

  2. Run an online repair of Office from the Control Panel.

Important: Please choose the Online Repair option instead of Quick Repair. If you run Quick Repair, the latest build version doesn’t get installed.

  3. Restart the computer again and open the Office application.

  4. Click File > Account, and verify the Office version under Office Updates in the Product Information section. It should be a newer version than 16.0.7167.2040.

If you’ve done the above step and you continue to get the same error message, please do the following:

  • Choose the Uninstall a program option in the Windows Control Panel, find your Office program, and check the Office version.

  • If the Office version isn’t 16.0.7167.2040, create a new post on with the error you’re getting along with the exact Office build version.

When using OneNote 2013 or OneNote 2016, if you're trying to delete or modify a custom template, you may be unable to click the 'Delete' option, or find it disabled. This issue occurs for both consumer and commercial customers, primarily on Current Channel, First Release for Deferred Channel, and Deferred Channel.

We are aware of this issue and are working on a fix. You can refer back to this page for the latest update. To learn more about the different update channels for Office customers, click here.

When opening recently imported notebooks from Evernote in OneNote 2016 or OneNote Universal (OneNote on Windows 10 devices, including tablet and phone) with OneNote Importer, you may be unable to view your notebooks or receive this error: "We're sorry, something went wrong during sync. We'll try again later. (Error code: 0xE0000B65)."

This issue is now fixed as of 08/29. If the issue still persists, proceed to the workaround Nick Andre recommends in this discussion, marked as Answer.

After signing in to OneNote 2010, you may experience the following:

  • your notes are missing and cannot be retrieved from OneDrive

  • you receive the message "There are no sections open in this notebook or section group. Click here to create a new section."

This has been fixed with the update released on 08/19. To get the update immediately, open OneNote and click File > Account > Update Options > Update Now.
