Find definitions and get insights from the web in Word on a mobile device

The mobile version of Word doesn't include a built-in thesaurus, but you can use Smart Lookup to find definitions, synonyms, and more on the Internet from within your Word app.

Note: You must be connected to the Internet to use Smart Lookup in Word.

Find definitions, synonyms and more on your Android or Windows tablet or phone

  1. Select the word you want to look up, and then tap Smart Lookup on the mini toolbar that appears.

  2. In the Smart Lookup pane, scroll through the results to find a dictionary, thesaurus, or synonym-finding website that you want to use. If necessary, choose More to see more results.

  3. Use your preferred browser to open the web page and find the word you want, copy or write down the word, and then return to Word to type or paste the word into your document.

Find definitions on your iPad or iPhone

  1. Select the word you want to look up, and then tap Define on the mini toolbar that appears.

  2. At the bottom of the Dictionary pane, tap Search Web, and then scroll through the results to find a dictionary, thesaurus, or synonym-finding website that you want to use.

  3. Open the web page and find the word you want, copy or write down the word, and then return to Word to type or paste the word into your document.

Get insights with Smart Lookup on your iPad or iPhone

The Smart Lookup pane, powered by Bing, offers more than just definitions.

  1. Select the word you want to look up, and then tap Smart Lookup on the mini toolbar that appears.

  2. In the Smart Lookup pane, scroll through the results to find definitions, Wiki articles, top related searches from the internet that you want to use in your document all within your Word app. If necessary, chooseMore to see more results.

Note: You can also get to Smart Lookup any time in your Word app by going to Review > Smart Lookup and entering the query there.
