Enable or disable an offline model cube

When you create and deploy a model in PerformancePoint Planning Business Modeler, PerformancePoint Planning Server creates a multidimensional data structure called a OLAP cube. The cube includes all dimensions and measures that you defined in the model. By using cubes, Microsoft Office PerformancePoint Server 2007 enables much faster and more powerful data analysis.

When you download model data for business users to PerformancePoint Add-in for Excel, you download part of the model cube so that the user can work with the data. If the user does not have to submit data back to the server, it is often better for the user to work with cube data in Excel without a active connection to the server.

Some advantages of working offline are as follows:

  • Faster calculations     When a user works offline, the client computer stores data in its local cache. As a result, the computer can retrieve data for calculations much faster than is possible if it retrieves it from a server.

  • Portability    When the client computer stores the data locally, the user is free to travel without being concerned about a server connection.

  • Independence from server processes     When data is stored on the client computer, server processes such as maintenance or heavy traffic do not affect the user.

By default, Planning Business Modeler enables users to work offline, but you can also configure this property manually. To learn how to do this, see Add, delete, or modify a model property.
