Download public folders in Cached Exchange Mode

You can access the public folders that are displayed in the Favorites folder under Public Folders when you don't have a connection to your mail server or are working offline.

Notes:  This feature requires a Microsoft Exchange Server account configured to use Cached Exchange Mode.

September 16, 2016: When you search in a Public Folder that you've added to your favorites in Outlook 2016, no search results are returned. We're investigating this issue and will update this article when we have more info. To workaround this issue, turn off cashed public folder favorite, by going to File > Account Settings > Account Settings > select your Microsoft Exchange account > Change > More Settings > Advanced > clear the Download Public Folder Favorites checkbox.

  1. Click the File tab.

  2. In the right pane, click Account Settings, and then click Account Settings.

  3. On the Email tab, select the Exchange Server email account, and then click Change.

  4. Click More Settings, and then click the Advanced tab.

  5. Under Cached Exchange Mode Settings, check the Download Public Folder Favorites box.


  • If the Download Publish Folder Favorites box is greyed out, check the Use Cached Exchange Mode box.

  • Only your public folder items in the Favorites folder are downloaded.
