Create or remove a rule set

A rule set is a collection of business rules in PerformancePoint Planning Business Modeler. Each rule set has a rule set type that determines the kind of rules that can belong to the rule set.

While a rule set might contain multiple rules or no rules at all, each rule must belong to a rule set. Most rule sets can contain, or nest, other rule sets of the same type.

Planning Business Modeler creates root-level rule sets for Definition, Automatic, and Model Variable rule sets, and creates rule sets for the system-defined procedural rules that compute opening balances.

Each rule has three specific characteristics that govern how Planning Business Modeler processes the rule — rule set type, rule type, and rule implementation.

Rule type and rule set type are closely related. Every rule must belong to a rule set, and, generally, the choice of rule set type determines which options are available for rule type. Different rule set types can contain different kinds of rules, and the kind of rule you select determines the options that you have for implementing the rule. The following table lists the available rule set types, and shows the rule types that are permitted for each.

Create a new rule set

To create a new rule set:

  1. Click Models in the Workspace Browser pane, and then click the model in which you want to create a rule set.

  2. When the model opens, click the Business Rules tab. If you do not have the model checked out, click Check Out in the Model Tasks pane.

  3. Click Create a new rule set to open the Create New Rule Set dialog box.

  4. In the Name box, type a name for the new rule set.

  5. In the Label box, type a unique label for the new rule set.

    Tip: For more information about creating names and labels, see About names and labels.

  6. (Optional.) In the Description box, type a description for the new rule set.

  7. (Optional.) Click the Root rule set check box if you want the new rule set to be a root rule set.

    Tip: Users cannot create Definition and Automatic rule sets at the root level

  8. From the Type drop-down list, select the type of rule set.

  9. Click OK to add the new rule set to the business rules table.

Import a rule set from another model

Note: When you import business rules, the dimensions associated with the business rules must be consistent with the dimensions of the target model. If the dimensions are not consistent, you might encounter errors when you attempt to validate the rules.

To import a rule set from another model:

  1. In the Site Browser pane, click Models.

  2. In the model site workspace, double-click the model that you want to open.

  3. When the model opens, click the Business Rules tab.

  4. In the Model Tasks pane, click Check out.

  5. Click Import Rules to open the Import Rule(s) dialog box.

    Important: You cannot import a Definition rule set. Planning Business Modeler provides a predefined Definition rule set, and does not support importing other Definition rule sets.

  6. In the Location box, enter the fully qualified path to the file, or click Browse to browse for the file.

  7. In the Open dialog box, locate the business rules file that you want to import, and then click Open to display the rules in the Business Rules workspace. Alternatively, in the Filename box, type the file name for business rules file you want to import.

  8. (Optional) Select the Import to root check box.

    Note: If you do not select Import to root, Planning Business Modeler adds the rules that you import to the currently selected rule set. If the rule type of the imported rule is not compatible with the selected rule set, the import will fail.

    Important: If the imported file contains rules that are not in a rule set, the importation will fail.

Remove a rule set or a rule

Important: Before you remove a rule set or a rule from a model, be sure that the rule set or rule is not being used in a job that is currently running, or in a job that is scheduled to run. If you try to remove a rule set that is part of an active job (that is, a job that is running or scheduled), Planning Business Modeler does not remove the rule, but instead displays a message that the rule is in use.

If you remove a rule set that is part of an inactive job, Planning Business Modeler displays a dialog box that asks whether you also want to remove the associated job template.

To remove a rule set:

  1. In the Site Browser, click Models, and then double-click the model that contains the rule that you want to remove.

  2. If you have not yet checked out the model, click Check Out in the Model Tasks pane.

  3. Click the Business Rules tab.

  4. Right-click the rule set that you want to remove, and click Delete selected object.

  5. In the warning dialog box, click Yes to remove the rule set from the model.
