Configure your server information

Note: Your connection type or current geographical location can affect the server name that you must use to connect to your organization’s IM system. If you configure different internal and external server addresses, you will not need to modify your server settings when you move inside and outside the firewall boundaries of your organization’s network.

To configure your server informatio n

  1. Do one of the following:

    • If you are signed in, click Menu > Options.

    • If you are not signed in, click Options.

  2. Click Server, and then do one or both of the following:

    • Click External server name, and then enter the full address (including port number) for the Microsoft® Office Communications Server that is used by users connecting from outside your organization's network.

    • Click Internal server name, and then enter the full address (including port number) for the Office Communications Server that is used by users connecting from inside your organization's network.

      You must include the port number in the server address in <server address>:<port number> format. For example, sip.contoso.com:443. If you do not know the external or internal server address, contact your system administrator.

  3. Click Connect using, and then click either TLS to connect by using Transport Layer Security protocol or TCP to connect by using Transmission Control Protocol. If you are not sure which connection protocol to use, contact your system administrator.

  4. When you are finished, click Done.

In some cases, you will need a proxy server to connect to your IM system. To determine if you need a proxy server and, if so, the name of your proxy server, contact your system administrator.

To configure a proxy server

  1. Click Start > Settings.

  2. Click Connections > Proxy > Menu > Add.

  3. Enter the following information, and then click Done.

    • In Description, enter a name for the connection.

    • In Connects from, click the type of network from which you will connect

    • In Connects to, click the type of network to which you will connect.

    • In Proxy (name:port), enter the proxy server name and port number in <server name>:<port number> format.

    • In Type, click the type of proxy connection that you want to create.

    • In User name, enter your user name for the network to which you will connect.

    • In Password, enter your password.
