Configure your server information

Note: Your connection type or current geographical location can affect the server name that you must use to connect to your organization’s IM system. If you configure different internal and external server addresses, you will not need to modify your server settings when you move inside and outside the firewall boundaries of your organization’s network.

  1. Do one of the following:

    • If you are signed in, tap Menu > Options.

    • If you are not signed in, tap Options.

  2. Tap the Server tab, and then do one or both of the following:

    • Tap External server name, and then enter the full address (including port number) for the Microsoft® Office Communications Server that is used by users connecting from outside your organization's network.

    • Tap Internal server name, and then enter the full address (including port number) for the Office Communications Server that is used by users connecting from inside your organization's network.

You must include the port number in the server address in <server address>:<port number> format. For example, sip.contoso.com:443. If you do not know the external or internal server address, contact your system administrator.

  3. Tap Connect using, and then tap either TLS to connect by using Transport Layer Security protocol or TCP to connect by using Transmission Control Protocol. If you are not sure which connection protocol to use, contact your system administrator.

  4. When you are finished, tap ok.

In some cases, you will need a proxy server to connect to your IM system. To determine if you need a proxy server and, if so, the name of the proxy server, contact your system administrator.

To specify a proxy server

  1. Tap Start > Settings.

  2. Tap the Connections tab > Connections.

  3. Tap Set up my proxy server.

  4. Select the This network connects to the Internet and This network uses a proxy server to connect to the Internet check boxes.

  5. In the Proxy server box, type the name of the proxy server that you want to use.

  6. When you are done, tap ok.
