Configure the Office SharePoint Server Search service

  1. On the Search Administration page, under Administration, click Central Administration.

  2. On the Central Administration page, under Central Administration, click Operations.

  3. On the Operations page, in the Topology and Services section, click Services on server.

  4. On the Services on Server page, click Office SharePoint Server Search in the list of services.

  5. If you want to use the server for the indexing of content, on the Configure Office SharePoint Server Search Service Settings page, in the Query and Indexing section, select the Use this server for indexing content check box.

  6. If you want to use the server for serving search queries, select the Use this server for serving search queries check box.

  7. In the Contact E-mail Address section, in the E-mail Address box, type the e-mail address that external site administrators can contact if problems arise when their sites are crawled.

  8. In the Farm Search Service Account section, specify the account you want the Office SharePoint Server Search service to use.

  9. In the Index Server Default File Location section, in the Default index file location box, type the path for the search index (for example, C:\searchindexes), or accept the default file location.

  10. In the Indexer Performance section, indicate whether you want indexing to be performed at the maximum or at a reduced rate.

  11. In the Web Front End And Crawling section, select one of the following:

    • Use all web front end computers for crawling      Select this option if you do not want to define a dedicated Web front-end computer for crawling.

    • Use a dedicated web front end computer for crawling      If you select this option, choose a Web front-end computer from the list.

Specifying a dedicated Web front-end computer for crawling reduces use of the other Web front-end computers in the farm that would otherwise be subject to crawling.

Tip: If your index server is dedicated and is not running any other shared services, activate the Web front-end role on the index server and specify the index server as the dedicated Web front-end computer for crawling.

Important: Changing this setting can have serious implications. For more information, see the article "Configure a dedicated front-end Web server for crawling" in the section for Microsoft Search Server 2008 on TechNet.

  12. Click OK.
