Check spelling in Word Online

Everyone makes typos and spelling mistakes. Fortunately, Word Online makes them easy to find and fix.

If you’re in Reading View, switch to Editing View by clicking Edit Document > Edit in Word Online.

While in Editing View, if you type a word that Word Online doesn’t recognize, it puts a red, wavy line under it:

Right-click the word to see a list of suggestions:

Then, click the suggestion you want to use.

Can Word Online also check grammar?

Unfortunately, no. But if you have the Word desktop program, you can click the Open in Word button to open your document in Word and check the grammar there:

After opening your document in Word, check the grammar. Then, press Ctrl+S to save your document to its original location.

Word Online works seamlessly with the Office desktop programs. If you don’t have Office, try or buythe latest version now.

Get rid of the red, wavy line that appears under a word

If for some reason you want to ignore a misspelled word, right-click the word and click Set Proofing Language:

Then, select Don’t check spelling:

Recheck a word that you chose to stop checking

If you change your mind, right-click the word and click Set Proofing Language.

Then, clear Don’t check spelling.
