Change text to upper, lower, or proper (normal) case

If you imported or copied text into your worksheet and the case doesn’t look quite the way you want it to, you can use text functions to quickly change it. In Excel Online, you can use the UPPER, LOWER, or PROPER functions to change text to uppercase, lowercase, or proper (sentence) case.

In the example below we’ll change the customer names in column A to proper case so that the first letter in each name appears capitalized.

  1. If needed, insert a column next to the column that has the text you want to change.

  2. In cell B2, type =PROPER(A2), and press Enter.

    Note: If you want to change text to all lowercase, you would type =LOWER(A2) and for uppercase, =UPPER(A2).

  3. To apply the same text case to the other names, you can fill down the formula by selecting cell B2 and double-clicking the fill handle.

Delete the first column

After you’ve changed the text case, you can get rid of column A. But first convert function references in column B to values. Here’s how:

  1. Select the column with the function reference (column B) and click Copy.

  2. Click cell A2 > Paste and pick Paste Values.

  3. Right-click the column B header and pick Delete Columns.
