In Excel Online, you can open workbooks with conditional formatting that was applied in a different version of Excel and view the formatted data. Because you can’t add conditional formatting in Excel Online, you might want to copy and paste it to other cells. Unfortunately, you can’t do that either because Format Painter—the tool you need to copy conditional formatting—isn’t available in Excel Online.
If you have the Excel desktop application, you can use the Open in Excel button to open your workbook and use Format Painter to copy conditional formatting and paste it to other cells. Here’s how:
Click Open in Excel, and use Format Painter to copy and paste conditional formatting.
When you save the workbook and reopen it in Excel Online, you’ll see the copied formatting.
