Add records at Dynadot to set up your SharePoint Online Public Website

Note: The SharePoint Online Public Website information in this article applies only if your organization purchased Office 365 prior to March 9, 2015. If you purchased Office 365 after March 9, 2015, use an Office 365 website hosting partner.

Before you rename the site to use your custom domain name, make sure you've finished designing the website (in Office 365) and that you're ready for everyone to see it. Then when you're ready to use your custom domain for the address, you create (at the DNS host for your domain) a CNAME record to point to your customized website.

Ready to create that CNAME record at Dynadot? Follow the steps in this article. (Need more help? Get support.)

Add the CNAME record to use your custom domain

First, review one of the two following linked articles (depending on the Office 365 subscription you have) for an overview of the process.

Then, when you’re ready to create the required CNAME record, use the steps in the following table.



Add a CNAME record.

  1. On the Dynadot DNS tab, find the Subdomain Records section.

    To find the DNS tab, see Find your DNS records at Dynadot.

  2. In the Record Type drop-down list, choose CNAME.

  3. Copy the values from the CNAME row in the Additional Office 365 records section of the Add DNS records page into the empty record:

    • Subdomain: Use the name of your custom domain; for example,

    • IP Address or Target Host: Use where name is the name of your custom domain; for example,

    • Time to Live (TTL): Use 1 hour.

      Note: To set the Time to Live (TTL) value, scroll to the bottom of the page and choose the TTL value from the drop-down list. This sets the TTL for all DNS records in your domain.

  4. Choose Use Dynadot DNS to save your changes.

    (You may have to scroll down.)

Note:  Typically it takes about 15 minutes for DNS changes to take effect. However, it can occasionally take longer for a change you've made to update across the Internet's DNS system. Set up redirection so that people can get to your public website if they don’t type www

You probably want people to be able to get to your public website without including www in the address. To do this, use the steps in the following table to set up redirection at Dynadot. This maps the root domain name (for example, to the full domain name (for example,

What you’ll see

Select the domain.

Set up redirection.

  1. In the Webpage to Forward to box, type or paste your fully qualified URL; for example,

  2. In the Forward Status Code section, select 301 Redirect - Permanently moved.

  3. Choose Forward Domain to save your changes.

Changes may take a few minutes, or up to an hour, to update across the Internet.

Find your DNS records at the Dynadot website

If you need help finding the place where you work with DNS records at Dynadot, follow the steps below.


What you’ll see

  1. In your browser, go to your domains at Dynadot and sign in.

  2. On the Manage page, in the list of domains, choose the name of the domain you want to update.

  3. In the Edit domain name page, choose the value in the Name Servers field.

    The page for the domain opens.



Add the required domain record.

(You must add this record to enable DNS updates.)

  1. In the Domain Record section, select CNAME as the record type, and then type or paste in your domain name; for example,

  2. Choose Use Dynadot DNS to save your changes.
