Add a birthday event or holiday calendar in Outlook.com

You can add a birthday event or a holiday calendar in Outlook.com.

Improvements are coming to Outlook.com; in fact, some customers are already enjoying the new Outlook.com experience. How you add a birthday or calendar event depends on whether you've been upgraded to the new experience. For instructions, select the link below that matches your mailbox.

Calendar in Outlook.com has a dedicated birthday calendar that automatically populates with the known birthdays of everyone in your contact list. You can also add birthdays at any time.

To add a birthday
  1. In Calendar, click the arrow next to New, and then click Birthday.

  2. Enter the person's name and birthday information, and then click Save.

Notes: Calendar is connected to your contact list in People, so:

  • If you add a birthday to a contact in People, the birthday will be added to your calendar.

  • If you add a birthday in Calendar, and the name you enter matches someone in your contact list, the birthday will be added to their contact.

  • If you add a birthday in Calendar, and the person isn't in your contact list, they'll be added.

To delete a birthday
  • In Calendar, click the event and press the Delete key.

  • In People, delete their contact or the birth date from their contact.

Outlook.com automatically creates a holiday calendar for your country or region, if it's available. You can also add Outlook.com holiday calendars from other countries or regions, as well as lunar calendars.

Note: The events in holiday an lunar calendars are read-only. You can't edit, delete, or share them.

To add a holiday or other calendar
  1. From the following list, click the calendar you want to add. You'll be taken to your Outlook.com calendar.

  2. Click Subscribe. The URL and calendar name should be filled out.

  3. Select a color and charm for the calendar, and then click the Subscribe button.

Tip: Before you can add a birthday event, you'll need to turn on the birthday calendar if you haven't done it already.

Turn on the birthday calendar

  1. On the Outlook navigation bar, click the app launcher Select the app launcher , and then click Calendar.

  2. Click Settings Click Settings > Options.

  3. Under Calendar, click Birthday calendar.

  4. Select Turn on the birthday calendar, and then click Save.

Add a birthday event
  1. On the Outlook navigation bar, click the app launcher Select the app launcher , and then click Calendar.

  2. On the Calendar navigation bar, click New > Birthday event.

  3. Under Details, enter the name, birth date, set a reminder, and click Save.

    The birthday appears in your calendar.

Tips: Calendar is connected to your contact list in People, so:

  • If you add a birthday in Calendar, and the person isn't in your contact list, they'll be added.

  • If you add a birthday to a contact in People, the birthday will be added to your calendar.

  • If you add a birthday in Calendar, and the name you enter matches someone in your contact list, the birthday will be added to their contact.
