"OneDrive cannot connect to Windows" error when accessing files in OneDrive

ISSUE

After enabling Files on Demand in OneDrive, some customers may see the following error when trying to access items in your OneDrive folder.

  • OneDrive cannot connect to Windows. Files On-Demand requires a connection to Windows in order to show your files without taking up space on this device. OneDrive can keep trying to connect to Windows or you can choose to download all your files. You won't be able to use online-only files until this is fixed.

This is because the cldflt.sys driver is not running. 

STATUS: WORKAROUND

Check to see if cldflt.sys is running, and if it isn't, enable it.

  1. Press the Windows key  Press the Windows key and browse to Windows SystemCommand Prompt. Right-click and select More then Run as administrator.

  2. Type cd %systemroot%\system32\drivers and press Enter.

  3. Type sc query cldflt and press Enter.

  4. Look for a line in the results called State. If the state is not 4, change the state of cldflt.sys to automatically run.

  5. To change the state, type sc config cldflt start=auto and press Enter. The dialog box should
    display [SC] ChangeServiceConfig SUCCESS.

  6. Restart your computer.
