What to check

How to remove the custom domain name

Settings for all users

  1. Change the email address for each user to use a domain that isn't the one you're removing. One option is to change the domain back to the initial yourcompanyname.onmicrosoft.com domain.

Or, if this was a test account, you can remove all the users.

Distribution groups

For plans that use Office 365 Small Business:

  • Go to Admin > Add users, reset passwords, and more > Groups. For each group, choose Edit Edit, and select either a different custom domain name or the yourcompanyname.onmicrosoft.com address.

For all other plans:

  1. Go to Admin > Exchange > Recipients > Groups.

  2. For each group that uses the custom domain in the email address, choose Edit Edit, and change the SMTP address and any custom address types to use either a different custom domain name or the yourcompanyname.onmicrosoft.com address. For more information, see Manage Distribution Groups.

Your public website hosted on Office 365

For plans that use Office 365 Small Business:

  • In Office 365, select Admin. Or, select the app launcher Office 365 app launcher icon, and then select Admin.

    Office 365 navigation options
  • Choose Manage your public website > Change Address, and select either a different custom domain name or the yourcompanyname.sharepoint.com address.

For all other plans, if you have set up a SharePoint Online Public Website:

  1. Go to the Office 365 admin center.

  2. Choose SharePoint, and select the checkbox next to your public website.

  3. If you want to keep your public website, choose Website domains, and in the New URL box, select either a different custom domain name or the yourcompanyname.sharepoint.com address. Or, if you want to delete the contents of the public website, choose Delete.

Custom DNS records for the domain

  1. If Office 365 manages your DNS records, and if you have added any custom DNS records to Office 365, remove them. Select the domain you're removing, and choose Manage DNS.

Note    The records that Office 365 adds for you, for example, when Office 365 sets up the DNS records for your domain, will be automatically deleted when you remove the domain.

  2. If you manage the DNS records for your domain at your DNS host for the domain, delete any records at your DNS host that you created that point to Office 365 services. If you need help finding the DNS records at your DNS host, see the links to step-by-step instructions for creating DNS records.

Tip    If you have any subdomains set up for this custom domain name, be sure to also remove them.

The default domain

  1. Go to the Manage domains page.

  2. On the Manage domains page, select a domain that isn’t the one you want to remove.

  3. Choose Set as default.

Office 365 domains that can’t be removed

There are a few Office 365 domains that you can’t remove.

  • You can’t remove the original contoso.onmicrosoft.com domain name that was provided for your account when you signed up.

  • If you've set up directory synchronization, then a domain was automatically added to your account that looks similar to this: contoso.mail.onmicrosoft.com. This domain name can’t be removed.
