The AutoNumLgl field numbers paragraphs for legal and technical publications. You can’t manually update an AutoNumLgl field.

Important:  This field is considered obsolete but is provided for compatibility with Microsoft Word 2000 or earlier versions. We recommend that you use the ListNum field instead of AutoNum when using Microsoft Word 2013, Word 2010, Word 2007, Word 2003, or Word 2002.

Use the built-in heading styles to format headings in the document, and then insert an AutoNumLgl field at the beginning of each heading paragraph. The numbers reflect the heading levels that correspond to the heading styles.

If you insert an AutoNumLgl field in paragraphs of body text (that is, paragraphs not formatted with built-in heading styles), the number of the preceding heading is included in the paragraph number. For example, if the preceding heading is numbered 1.2.3, paragraphs of body text are numbered 1.2.3.1, 1.2.3.2, 1.2.3.3, and so on.

Note: The result of an AutoNumLgl field isn't displayed if the field is nested within an If field.

A field codetells Word what to insert or provide to the document after determining the value of the field code, such as the current date or the number of pages. Usually, the resulting value is simply displayed as part of the document. You can toggle between viewing the result or viewing the field code by pressing Alt+F9 on Windows or fn+Option+F9 on Mac.

Syntax

When you view the AutoNumLgl field code in your document, the syntax looks like this:

{ AUTONUMLGL [Switches ] }

Switches

\e

Displays the number in legal format without the period.

\s

Defines the separator character, which you place directly after the switch.
