Getting phones for Skype for Business Online

The people in your business can use traditional desktop phones with Skype for Business to make and receive calls, in addition to using the Skype for Business app on their PC.

IP phones that work with Skype for Business

You can choose from several models within the VVX line from Polycom, and phones running Lync Phone Edition (LPE).

Note: At this time, phones that are available in common areas such as lobbies aren't supported by Skype for Business.

We are working closely and partnered with Polycom to develop and validate the major update to the VVX series firmware that is supported for Skype for Business, which was released on October 1st, 2015. Polycom VVX models require version UCS 5.4.0A or higher firmware to be installed to support Skype for Business. New VVX phones will be shipped with this firmware pre-installed. To learn more, see Office 365/Skype for Business Online Solutions

Skype for Business works with the following Polycom phone models:

  • VVX 600

  • VVX 500

  • VVX 400

  • VVX 300

  • VVX 201

When ordering Polycom VVX phones, it is important to buy phones with a product ID that ends with -019. These are the version of each phone model that has the Skype for Business qualified version firmware version preinstalled. UCS 5.4.0A is the name of the release package.

Note: Newer desktop phone devices, outside of Lync Phone Edition, that are used to connect to Skype for Business Online will normalize to the certified firmware configured within the PSTN Calling Service.  This will be the latest firmware certified by the vendor.  The result could downgrade the device to a lower revision level - this is expected.  If a more recent version is desired, you should work with your phone vendor to have more recent versions of their firmware certified.

For more details on Polycom phones, see Polycom VVX Business Media Phones, Skype for Business Edition.

Lync Phone Edition (LPE) models require the May 2015 CU (version 4.0.7577.4463) update but they only support authentication using USB tethering only.

The supported LPE models are:

Warning: Lync Phone Edition (LPE) phones you have set up for your on-premises deployment must be updated to the minimum or later required firmware prior to moving those users over to Skype for Business Online. If you move your users from on-premises to Skype for Business Online before you update the firmware on the phones, those phones won't be able to connect to Skype for Business Online.

Required Licenses

Whether you're using Skype for Business with a traditional phone, PC, or Mac, you need the same licenses: the Cloud PBX add-on and the PSTN Calling plan. To learn more, see Skype for Business add-on licensing.
