The Outline Level field indicates the place of a task or assignment in the project outline hierarchy. The outline level is indicated by a number. The number of outline levels you can set is virtually unlimited.

There are several categories of Outline Level fields.

Data Type    Integer

Outline Level (task field)

Entry Type    Calculated

How Calculated    Project assigns a value in the Outline Level field according to the task's outline level in the project outline hierarchy. A task with an outline level of 1 is at the highest level in the outline, that is, it has no summary tasks above it. A task with an outline level of 10, for example, has nine summary tasks above it. It might also have any number of subtasks below it.

Best Uses    Add the Outline Level field to a task view when you want to display or filter for the position of the task within the project's outline structure.

Example    The "Research costs" task is a subtask of the "Write proposal" summary task, which in turn is a subtask of the "Develop new accounts" summary task. If you add the Outline Level field to the Task Sheet view, you will see that the "Develop new accounts" summary task has an outline level of 1. The "Write proposal" task under it has an outline level of 2. The "Research costs" task under that has an outline level of 3.

Remarks    You can specify the number of outline levels of tasks you want to display.

Outline Level (assignment field)

Entry Type    Calculated

How Calculated    Project assigns a value in the Outline Level field according to the assignment's outline level in the project outline hierarchy. A task with an outline level of 1 is at the highest level in the outline, that is, it has no summary tasks above it. A task with an outline level of 10, for example, has nine summary tasks above it. It might also have any number of subtasks below it.

Best Uses    Add the Outline Level field to the sheet portion of the Task Usage or Resource Usage view when you want to display the position, or depth, of the assignment within the outline structure.

Example    Sean is assigned to the "Write proposal" task, which is a subtask of the "Develop new accounts" summary task. If you add the Outline Level field to the Task Usage view, you will see that the "Develop new accounts" summary task has an outline level of 1. The "Write proposal" task has an outline level of 2. Sean's assignment row has an outline level of 3.
